3-hour classes

3-hour introductory/intermediate classes

Classes aimed at developing more specialised knowledge in particular areas, but without assuming any prior knowledge of the subject. Based on combination of specimens, presentations and discussion. The subjects listed are examples of the areas covered, but many other areas can be accommodated on request—bespoke sessions are not a problem, so please ask!

£20 per person, minimum of two people (£30 for a one-to-one class)



Classes available on a wide of particular groups of fossils, including:

  • trilobites
  • graptolites
  • molluscs
  • brachiopods
  • bryozoans
  • corals
  • sponges
  • Carboniferous plants
  • microfossils
  • ostracodes and other crustaceans


...and on various aspects of palaeontology, such as:

  • evolution by natural selection
  • taphonomy (formation of fossils)
  • biostratigraphy
  • palaeoecology



  • Plate Tectonics
  • Interpreting igneous rocks
  • Interpreting metamorphic rocks
  • Limestones
  • Sandstone, mudstone and siltstone
  • Dating rocks
  • Folds and faults
  • Geological maps: interpreting them, and making them


Natural History

  • Sessions available exploring many different topics, including:
  • Specific groups, such as beetles, bugs, barkflies, springtails, bees or flies
  • Ecology of native trees, meadows, ponds, or other local habitats
  • Wildflowers and other plants


The Rest

I have a background of dabbling in all sorts of areas of the natural sciences. Planetary geology, climate change, relativistic physics and quantum mechanics... ask, and I'll see what I can do!
